Tate’s Visit to the Hospital

Tate and Ben walking to the hospital

Mere weeks after our last hospital adventure, Tate needed a turn at the hospital experience.

About a week ago, Tate was walking down a porch while running his arm over the railing. A good-sized splinter stabbed him in the bicep, on the inside a couple inches above the elbow. We worked for hours that afternoon trying to get, what we thought was a small splinter, out of his arm. He was quite hysterical about it and we weren’t able to pull anything out.

We called the nurse-line and an immediate-care office for advice. Neither of them provided much help or guidance. We already had an appointment with our pediatrician to get Jasper’s stitches taken out on the next Monday, so we held off a day to double-book both boys with the doctor.

The pediatrician looked at it and advised that we soak the arm to get it to work itself out. She also suggested that we make an appointment with the surgeon, just in case. Unfortunately, the surgeon wasn’t available for another week. So, we got a prescription for some antibiotics and set about waiting to see the surgeon.

The appointed day arrived. We saw the surgeon and she wanted to get Tate in quickly. There wasn’t much infection, but she was sure that there was still some wood in his arm and probably some other bad stuff too. Our hospital appointment was for 7am the next morning.

Tate in Pre-Op

Tate and I got up early and walked over to the hospital. We were hoping to get in an out in a few hours, maybe even before Megan needed to leave for work. But alas, it was not to  be so quick. We ended up waiting. And waiting. Then they’d move us to another room and we’d wait. And wait. Then a different nurse or doctor would come talk to us. Then we waited some more.

One of the nurses that visited showed tate the gas mask that he would wear that would put him to sleep. She explained very nicely and patiently how he would go to sleep and when he woke up, they would be all done.

We arrived at 7am and finally made it into the OR at about 10:30am. I had to leave him as he went into the OR. One of the nurses came out a few minutes later to tell me that he did great listening and following instructions, he got giggly with the gas and fell asleep in three breaths.

The surgeon came out about 30 minutes later to report that they pulled out about 1.5 or 2 inches of splinter from his arm. She said that they also cleaned out some infection, but it really looked pretty good. I still had to wait a bit before he was all set up in the post-op recovery area.

When they finally called me back, Tate was still sound asleep. He slept for about an hour after I got to him, but once he woke up, he was up! It didn’t take long for him to get back up to his usual pace.

Unfortunately, we still had to wait. The recovery nurse took several rounds of vitals and we had to wait for the anesthesiologist to come and OK him for discharge. And so we waited. And waited.

It was after 1pm before we were able to get out of the hospital. We went for pizza, picked up some more medicine and finally headed home. It was just before 3pm when we got home. Tate was running at full steam. I sat down and promptly fell asleep. Luckily Tate was jabbering away or else I would have slept through the time we needed to go get Jasper.

Everything turned out well and the wound is healing nicely. In a few weeks it will be as if nothing ever happened.

Follow up on the ER visit

Jasper on the hospital bed

So, Jasper did great in the ER. Me… not so much.

The doctor came in to take a look before she started, took away the prep cotton and said “wow”. He had a laceration about an inch and a half long, all the way to the bone. She said that she would have to “repair” it.

They wrapped him into a papoose board and got started. Megan held him at his feet on the uninjured side and I held him at his chest on the side where the doctor was working. He did not like being swaddled like that and as soon as the Doctor started the first stitch, Jasper started screaming. That spot above the eyelid and below the eyebrow is really sensitive and the numbing gel didn’t have quite enough effect. She put in a few stitches while Jasper struggled, then called for more local anesthetic to help dull the pain in his eyebrow.

By this time, I was tired and sore from trying to hold him against his struggling. We hadn’t eaten lunch and it was getting past 1:30pm.  The stress of seeing my baby boy’s supraorbital foramen, the stitches going in, hearing him scream “I want to get out!!” and struggle, me struggling to keep my emotions in check and having to hold him down so he could get his eyebrows poked was just too much for me. I started feeling a little light headed and sweaty. I said that I needed to sit down and both the nurse and the doctor stopped what they were doing and walked me to a chair. I didn’t pass out, but I had to close my eyes and breath deep to keep myself from blacking out.

I wanted to get back up to help, but got a look from the nurse that kept me in the chair.

Jasper ended up with 8 stitches. I didn’t see the last few go in. But with the extra pain medicine, he didn’t struggle so much. They cleaned him up, put a bandaid on the site and let him out of the papoose. Not even a few seconds later and he was back up and it was as if nothing had just happened.

They kept us there for a bit longer, probably to keep me sitting down, before bringing the discharge papers. Jasper will have to go in on Friday to get the stitches taken out and we need to take extra care to keep them clean and soft.

In all the hustle and bustle of getting the family to the hospital, I did an incomplete job of gathering our things from church before leaving. We discovered that I left Megan’s office keys (amongst many other things including Megan’s phone) in her office inside the locked church. We drove home, then I went back later when we knew people would be around to let me in. I got back around 6:30pm with all the missing things.

What a long day.

First ER Visit!

20120304-122329.jpgIt took only 6 and a half years. We finally have our first visit to the ER. And it wasn’t for the the boy who we thought it would be…

Jasper was running through the after-worship crowd, playing like a 2-year-old does. When all of a sudden he tripped over his own feet and fell face-first into a coffee table.

At first it looked like any other Jasper moment, but someone called out “I see blood!” and boy what’s there. With he help of several people (Thank you!!) I got him quickly into the kitchen area and finally has a look at the wound. He has a good 1 inch gash above his eye, below his eyebrow… and I could see bone.

After a lot of attention from the church ladies, many bloody paper towels, and some help from a doctor, we went off to the ER.

We’re in the ER now. Jasper is doing fine and even trying to climb around. He has some numbing gel on the cut and we’re waiting for it to do its thing before the doctor comes in to clean it up and put in the stitches or staples.

I’ll put up some more pics up after the doctor is done with him.

At the MSI

The office is on holiday today, so we are at the Museum of Science and Industry exploring some of our favorite exhibits. Right now, Tate and I are waiting in line for the coal mine tour.

20120220-103854.jpg It’s been quite a while since I’ve done the coal mine tour. I think the last time I went was with Tate not long after we first moves to Chicago.

Tate is being impatient, as usual. I think the next stop will be the ice cream parlor. An old fashioned ice cream sundae sounds quite nice.

We’re done with the coal mine now. As much as Tate complained about waiting, he was quite fascinate by the tour. He excitedly participated in the tour and our guide played along nicely. Now we’re waiting to meet up with Mom and Jasper.

We should have set a rally point…

Disney Vacation 2012 – Day 7

Home

Saturday was our day to travel home. We had a lot of work to do. Over the last 6 days we got ourselves comfortable in our home away from home. We had laundry to do, dishes to clean, drawers to unload, phone chargers and cables to find and bags to re-pack. Because we had a washer and dryer in our condo, we were able to go home with suitcases full of clean clothes. And boy were those bags full. We had collected a few take-home trinkets and gifts for friends. I was afraid we weren’t going to get the bags zipped up, but Megan was able to get creative with the packing and we got everything closed up.

We made it out of the room just in time for check-out. We used the Disney Magical Express curb-side check-in, so we got our bags checked and our boarding passed right there at the resort. On one hand, it was a bit weird leaving the bags there at the resort, trusting that we would see them again in Chicago. On the other hand, it was a great convenience not having to worry about getting the bags to the bus, off the bus, through the airport, then checked back in. Disney really has this vacation thing down.

We had a few hours to kill after dropping off our luggage, so we hopped back on the resort-loop monorail to check out the Polynesian and Grand Floridian resorts. The first stop was the Polynesian where we saw some Hawaiian dancers dancing to live music. The boys danced along and got a huge roll of stickers from the guy at the Disney Vacation Club desk. Tate stuck most of them on Jasper.

After a stop at the Kona Café for lunch, we got back on the monorail for a walk through the Grand Floridian resort. The Grand Floridian is quite spectacular. It is done up in an old-south elegant style, with marble floors and “salons” instead of shops. I think we might need to stay there for one of our next vacations.

We got on the Magical Express and rode out to the airport. Jasper fell asleep in my arms on the way. We had plenty of time before our flight, so we explored the airport a bit. There are a lot of shops at the Orlando airport. It may as well be a regular shopping mall that happens to have flight terminals. There happened to be a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in the food court, so we stopped for a snack before heading through security.

On our way here, Megan didn’t have her ID. On our way out, Molly got flagged for explosives screening and we forgot to empty out the water bottle in Megan’s bag, so she had to go back through security. After a bit of hassle, we made it through and were on our way to our gate. Some day we’ll get this airport security thing figured out.

Looking out the window of the airplane over the wingThe flight home was a bit bumpy, but went well enough. Neither boy slept this time. We tried to have a bit of dinner on the plane, but with the bumpy ride, nobody had much of an appetite. We had to sit on the taxiway for about 15 minutes because we got in early and the previous plane at our gate hadn’t left yet. We were all pretty impatient to get off the plane.

We picked up our bags (after a long wait to get the stroller from the oversized baggage counter) and stepped back out into the cold, into reality.

On the drive home, we remembered that we didn’t have anything to eat in the house. So, we stopped at the “Steal Your Treasure Island” to pick up enough to tide us over until we could get a Peapod delivery. Finally, we were able to go home.

We pulled around our corner to find our street unplowed and no good parking available. We slid and mashed our way into an open spot and unloaded. The boys got ready for bed and we shared a bedtime snack to settle the last few rumbles in our tummies.

Sleep came easy.

Now, reality looms and I have many things to take care of: fixing the flat tire, getting the car in for an oil change, work…

I preferred vacation.

Disney Vacation 2012 – Day 6

Hollywood Studios and Universal Studios

On Friday the boys and the girls went separate ways. The boys went back to Hollywood Studios and the girls went to Universal Studios to see the Magical World of Harry Potter. Perhaps I can talk Megan into guest-blogging the Universal Studios experiences. I will focus on the boys’ day in his post.

The day started by trying to get Megan and Molly from the resort (which is on the Disney property) to Universal Studios theme park. We had scheduled a cab, but they weren’t able to find it that morning, even after several calls back to the taxi dispatch. They ended up catching a ride on a shuttle with another group that was going to Universal as well.

The boys and I got ourselves ready and caught a bus over to Hollywood Studios. The goal was to let Tate have a second chance to do the Jedi Padiwan training “experience” that he did do on Wednesday. Long story short, he decided (again) not to do it. I even explained to him that we would not be back for several years, but he was resolute in his decision.

So instead we went on the Great Movie Ride. Both boys seemed to enjoy this ride, except where the alien jumps out of the ceiling. Tate seemed really interested in the part about westerns. I may have to break out some old John Wayne movies to get him more acquainted with the genre.

We wandered around for a bit and found our way to he “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” play lot. They had fun climbing around on the giant ant, giant spiderweb, giant blades of grass, and giant sniffing dog nose. I had to run to keep up with Jasper. He was having the time of his life.

We spent lunch at Pizza Planet.

20120121-213316.jpg This was both a good thing and a bad thing. It was good because I had them both engaged. It was bad because he were both engaged in something other than lunch. The pizza was on par with Pizza Hut, so not bad, but really not good either (Chicago Pizza Snob talking here). There were a lot of video games for the boys to “play”. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any quarters…

I was finally able to drag them away from the video games by asking them if they wanted to go back to Epcot. They both said yeah! We got about half way back to the bus and Jasper was almost asleep in he stroller and Tate was asleep on his feet. I suggested to them that we should go back to the room for some rest, then we would go swimming. They both agreed that this sounded like a better idea.

We made it back to the room and they were both asleep within minutes and slept for more than two hours. I sat out on the balcony and wrote (and snoozed).

By the time we got down to the pool, most of the pool area was in the shadow of the Bay Lake Tower, so it was a bit cool in the breeze. It did little to slow down the boys. They both played in the pool with great vigor, even to the point where Jasper was (seemingly) trying to drown himself and having a great time doing it. Tate went down the big slide all by himself many times.

Finally it was time to be done so we could head upstairs to get cleaned up in time for Megan and Molly to be home. Jasper didn’t want to hear any of this. He stomped his feet and said “but I want to” and walked right in to the deep end of the pool.

Well, this wasn’t my first dance and I saw where his little show of independence was going. I caught him by the arm just as he hit the water (and just as the lifeguard was getting out of his seat). He wasn’t too happy about that, but I had him.

We just finished cleaning up when Megan and Molly made it back to the room. They brought beer and frozen pizzas, the perfect meal to end a day like this.

Tomorrow we fly home and we have a lot of work to do before we can go. Come back tomorrow to read the exciting conclusion of our family vacation story.

Like Father, Like Son – part 2134

Today was a long day at the end of a long and exciting vacation. We’re all tired and a bit loopy from exhaustion.

Tonight Tate and I are sharing the outer room of our condo. I had the curtains drawn shut and all the lights out. Tate sat up in bed and said “My bed is in some really dark spots. I don’t like sleeping in such dark spots.”

I offer to turn on some lights and he agrees to have me turn on the under-cabinet lights in the kitchenette area. These lights provide a nice, subdued light, just right for going to sleep.

A minute or two after turning on the light, Tate turns to me and says “Dad, can you turn off the lights after I go to sleep? I don’t want them to burn out.”

He is so my son…

Disney Vacation 2012 – Day 5

Animal Kingdom and Epcot

Thursday started out with a bit more excitement than we wanted. Jasper, probably due gorging himself the night before, got sick first thing in the morning, then again just before we were set to leave. But, he was quite chipper through the whole thing, jumping around and generally being a 2-year-old, which made clean-up quite difficult. We decided that we were going to go for it with him instead of having someone stay behind with him. We brought along a big barf bag, just in case. Happily, we didn’t need to use it.

Jasper pretending to swimWe worked our way back to the African Safari first thing. Although the Animal Kingdom park seemed fairly busy, we didn’t have to wait more than a minute to get on the truck. We saw a lot more wildlife this time than we did last year. Jasper especially liked the giraffes and we got a lot of good pictures.

Even though he had been looking better, Jasper started slowing down right when we got to the park. By the time we were done with the African Safari, he was pretty much ready to fall back asleep. He spent most of the rest of the morning in the stroller snoozing.

It turned out that President Obama was at the Magic Kingdom on Thursday at noon. It’s a good thing that we weren’t planning on being there because I’m sure the crowds were crazy. It also explains the extra cautious security screening we received when we were at the Magic Kingdom a couple days before. He was long gone by the time we got back to our resort (which is right next to the Magic Kingdom), but everyone on the bus was talking about how jammed up things were for the last couple hours. If they only knew what happens when he comes home to Hyde Park for a long weekend…

We took some extra time to catch some rest at the resort and while Jasper slept, Tate and I went out to the pool area to play outside for a while. It was a bit cool because the pool is in the shadow of Bay Lake Tower, but we still had fun. The pool has a sloped floor, so Tate was able to find a comfortable place to play while also becoming more comfortable with swimming. We really need to get him into some good lessons. He really freaks out in the water.

We went down the big slide several times and the little slide more times than I can count. By then the pool deck was almost entirely in the shade, so we found the last few slivers of sunshine (along with several other people) to warm up and dry off. Megan, Molly and Jasper came out onto the balcony to beckon us upstairs to get cleaned up and ready for dinner.

Dinner was back in Epcot at Tappan Edo, a Japanese teppanyaki-style restaurant. The boys enjoyed the show, but neither ate much. I think vacation fatigue has started to set in. We roamed around the Japan pavilion for a while as we waited for the evening light show to start. I found some Japanese peppermint candy that I feared might have been a crazy-powerful peppermint, but it turned out to be about the same as a candy cane.

Our seats for the light show weren’t the greatest, but they were still pretty good. We got to see everything up close with only a few trees and things in the way. The boys and Aunt Molly loved the show. I held on to Jasper for most of the show and he kept saying “Daddy! Fire!”. Illuminations Light Show

It was 9:30 by the time the show was over and we were all pretty tired. But, my Epcot experience was not yet complete. I had not yet seen Captain EO and I wasn’t going to let this trip to Disney World come to an end without seeing it. Megan and Molly graciously granted me the extra time to go see it before heading back to the room. I took Tate with me. We were two of about twenty people in the huge Captain EO theater. We got great seats and the show was as awesome as ever. Woooo!

Tomorrow Megan and Molly are going to Universal Studios Theme Park to visit the Magical World of Harry Potter. The boys and I will be visiting the Hollywood Studios park again, then taking it easy, perhaps playing out in the pool again. Come back tomorrow to see if us boys can survive on our own for a day!
